Dear Secretary Haaland and Deputy Director Williams:
We, the undersigned, urge you to take immediate action in response to the letter signed by 115 renowned scientists in Support of Reinstating Federal Protection of the Gray Wolf. We ask that you consider a reversal of the delisting decision and reinstate federal protections for wolves throughout their historic range.
The shift to state management of wolves has already proved the alarming need to protect gray wolves from a small faction of people who want to eradicate their populations across the United States. Wolves occupy less than 15% of their historical range and are not recovered in a significant portion of their range as required by the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The Trump Administration’s hasty decision to remove wolves from the ESA was, as all prior decisions to delist wolves were, a political bargain that disregards the best available science supporting continued protections to aid in much-needed recovery efforts. This decision ignored the 1.8 million official public comments in support of continued ESA protections for wolves.
States where wolves are delisted have consistently proven their inability to scientifically manage wolves at levels that ensure sustainable, ecologically effective wolf populations that are secure from excessive persecution by humans. Idaho, Montana, Wisconsin, and Wyoming continue to view wolves as vermin rather than ecologically important keystone species and are taking the war on wolves to a new, barbaric level. Your leadership can reverse the loss of wolves and begin to restore biodiversity and the health and function of ecosystems where wolves play a critical role as keystone species.
Wolf conservation requires decision-making based on the best available and current science and peer review by independent scientists with expertise in wolf biology and conservation. The aforementioned scientists’ letter is clear evidence that there is an extraordinary wealth of scientific expertise and knowledge available to inform wolf conservation policies and practices. True and lasting wolf recovery requires an expedited, science-based and independently peer-reviewed national gray wolf recovery plan to ensure long-term recovery of wolves across their historic range. We further recommend you exercise your discretionary authority to declare an emergency relisting of gray wolves to protect the fragile extant wolf populations while science-based plans and revised policies for gray wolf recovery are being developed.
We are grateful for your time and consideration of this most urgent request.
